Blog tasks: Ideology

Media Magazine issue 52 has two good articles on Ideology. You need to read those articles (our Media Magazine archive is here) and complete a few short tasks linked to them.

Page 34: The World Of Mockingjay: Ideology, Dystopia And Propaganda

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence

The article says that Mockingjay shows how The Hunger Games uses media and propaganda to criticise capitalist society and show how power can be controlled or challenged.

2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?
Capitalism is shown as unfair and exploitative, with the rich Capitol controlling and benefiting from the poor districts while keeping them powerless.

3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological beliefs?

The films suggest the media is very powerful because it can manipulate people’s beliefs through propaganda and entertainment, but it can also be used to encourage resistance.

4) What is YOUR opinion on this topic? Do you think the media shapes our values and beliefs?

I think the media does shape our values and beliefs because it influences what we see, think about and accept as normal, even though people can still question it.

Page 48: They Live - Understanding Ideology

1) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?
The article suggests that Western societies believe money brings happiness, consumer goods bring fulfilment, marriage and family bring happiness, and obedience and work lead to fulfilment.

2) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?
Gramsci’s theory of hegemony suggests that those in power control society by making their ideas seem natural and common sense rather than using force.

3) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?
Althusser suggests that ideology works through institutions like the media to promote consumerism and the belief that buying more goods will lead to happiness.

4) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media

I partly agree with the idea in They Live because the media often reflects the interests of the economic elite, but audiences are not completely controlled and can still question media messages.

Part 2: The role of the media in democracy

Read this Constitution Unit blog on the importance of media in democracy. This brings together our work on ownership, public service broadcasting, regulation and ideology. Answer the following questions:

1) Why is the media important in a democracy?
The media is important in a democracy because it informs the public about politics, provides a space for debate, shapes public opinion, and holds those in power to account.

2) What are the hallmarks of a free and healthy media landscape?
A free and healthy media landscape includes media independence, a range of viewpoints (pluralism), impartial outlets, and high journalistic standards such as accuracy and fact-checking.

3) What risks are identified that threaten a healthy media environment?
The risks identified include political pressure on broadcasters, lack of independence, polarising content, the decline of local and investigative journalism, misinformation, and concentrated media ownership.
4) What is YOUR opinion on how the media can be safeguarded to protect democracy? You may want to think about ownership, regulation, technology or public service broadcasting here.

I think the media can be safeguarded by protecting public service broadcasters from political interference, limiting media monopolies, enforcing fair regulation, and encouraging accurate journalism that counters misinformation while still respecting free speech.
