Introduction to Postcolonialism: blog tasks

 1) Look at the first page. What is colonialism - also known as cultural imperialism?

2) Now look at the second page. What is postcolonialism? 

Postcolonialism is the study and criticism of colonial ideas. It questions white western views about race and power.

3) How does Paul Gilroy suggest postcolonialism influences British culture?


Paul Gilroy says Britain has not fully accepted the end of its empire. Because
 of this some people still treat immigrants badly and blame them for problems in society.

4) What is 'othering'?

Othering is when a group of people are seen as different or outsiders. They are separated from the main group in society.

5) What examples of 'othering' are provided by the article?

Examples include anti immigrant headlines in newspapers and political campaigns that blame migrants. The article also mentions media stereotypes about ethnic minorities.

6) What is 'double consciousness'? 

Double consciousness is when someone feels they have two identities. For example someone with African heritage living in a western country may feel they belong to two cultures but not fully to either.

7) What are 'racial hierarchies'?

Racial hierarchies are the belief that some races are better or more superior than others.

8) What examples from recent media products challenge the idea of racial hierarchies? 

Shows like Man Like Mobeen Top Boy and I May Destroy You challenge this by showing more realistic and complex representations of ethnic minorities.
