1) Complete Activity 1 on page 2 of the factsheet. Choose a media text you have enjoyed and apply the sender-message-channel-receiver model to the text. There is an example of how to do this in the factsheet (the freediving YouTube video).
The scmr model is

1. Sender

  • The Sidemen group — a collective of seven British YouTubers (KSI, Miniminter, Zerkaa, TBJZL, Behzinga, Vikkstar123, and W2S).

  • They create content including gaming videos, challenges, vlogs, and charity events.

  • They are both content creators and influencers.

2. Code

  • The style, language, and symbols used in their videos.

  • Informal, humorous, and often uses British slang.

  • Visual codes: fast cuts, on-screen text, emojis, gaming graphics.

  • Audio codes: energetic music, casual tone, laughter, sound effects.

  • Interactivity codes: direct address to camera, engagement with audience through comments, memes.

3. messgae

  • Entertainment, humor, camaraderie, and competition.

  • Encourages community among fans.

  • Sometimes incorporates messages about friendship, teamwork, and charity.

  • Promotes lifestyle content (gaming culture, sports, social challenges).

4. encoding

  • Primarily young audiences aged 13-25.

  • Fans of gaming, YouTube culture, and British humor.

3) Why did Stuart Hall criticise the sender-message-channel-receiver model?
He didn’t believe that the ‘message’ had a fixed meaning,
encoded by the sender to be passively accepted by the
receiver, although he was certain that the senders of the
message probably hoped it did.He felt that meaning was actually being produced in the
spaces between this relationship, in a dynamic way that
varied depending on who received the message.

4) What was Hall's circuit of communication model?
They
could work independently of one another in the construction of
meaning and the uses audiences make of what they consume
would therefore vary.

5) What does the factsheet say about Hall's Reception theory?
.Some people have pointed out that Hall’s model assumes that
everyone is able to recognise the dominant or hegemonic
reading. We don’t know for certain whether this is always
the case.
• Hall’s work is politically inclined to seek out evidence that
popular culture has a role in reinforcing cultural hegemony,
a shared agreement of values that helps preserve class
structures.
• Hall’s theory as considered valuable for drawing attention
to the significance of the audience in bringing their own
meanings to the media they consume.

6) Look at the final page. How does it suggest Reception theory could be criticised? The theory is valued for its recognition that communication
between the audience and producers of a text is not a
straightforward, one-way process.
