Audience theory 1: blog tasks

 Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?
The mail online article links to hypodermic needle theory as children who are consuming these violent videogames have experienced a change in their behaviour such as results which demonstrate that those who played these violent games had an increase in their hostile expactations meaning that they would think they act like the characters and aggresive in their behaviour

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?
This links to the hypodermic  theory as there is evidence of an violent videogame usage and that has led him to becoming an hacker and the media that he had consumed has made him more violent and go against the laws and become a hacker and someone might criticise the front page as it talks about a young child who hacked talktalk

3) What do you think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media?
I think that the hypodermic theory needle theory is too simplistic as it assumes that the people consume media without thinking and i dont think that audience believe everything they see in the media becuase that they are influenced by people called the opinion leaders

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader?
The two-step flow model instead suggests the audience are influenced by ‘opinion leaders’ in the media who mediate how the audience react to media texts. The theory suggests the media is not all-powerful and that social factors are important.

2) How do celebrities like Taylor Swift fit into the two-step flow model?
Celebrites like taylor swift are opinion leader who have a mass following and people who listen to their adivce and that can change the media that people can consume

3) In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?
In my opinion i think that the two step flow model is still relavant today as celebriets still hold power and infuence people

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points. The first one is done for you.

Diversion: Film - Blinded By The Light. Entertaining and offering escapism for fans of Bruce Springsteen or anyone that enjoys coming of age films or culture-clash comedies.
Personal Relationships: TV Show – Friends

Viewers feel connected to the characters and share their experiences, creating a sense of friendship and belonging.

perosnal identity:

Magazine – Vogue
Readers use it to explore their style and personality, helping them express who they are or who they want to be.

surveillance:

Newspaper – The Guardian
People read it to stay informed about news and world events, helping them understand what’s happening around them.

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?
I agree that audiences have become dependant on media because they have alot of time usage on media and they rely too much on the media and examples could be that most young people get their news on social media which exposes them toe everything

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?
It has made a lot of people dependant on media to give them all the information required to know whats been going around in the world and how that has made people to become lazy and not be intrested into buying newspapers and have all of their media being on social media and not on newspapers

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? What is your average screentime and how does this impact on your mood?
Reflecting on my own media usage,my media consumption impacts my emotions as it gives me a different insight on what has been going around in the world and i believe media has an overall positive impact on my health and wellbeing as it makes me satisfied when using it.My average screen time is around 4 hours and it impacts my mood in a positive way
