Cultural Industries: blog task

 1) What does the term 'Cultural Industries' actually refer to

Cultural industries refers to the creation, production and distribution of products of a cultural or artistic nature.Cultural industries are those industries that are most involved in the production of social meaning and Hesmondhalgh demonstartes to them being the most involved in the production process

2) What does Hesmondhalgh identify regarding the societies in which the cultural industries are highly profitable?

this tends to be societies that support the conditions where large companies and their political allies make these products and make money and these conditions being demand being met and minimal regulation outside of the general competition law

3) Why do some media products offer ideologies that challenge capitalism or inequalities in society?

This happens becuase the cultural industries companies need to continounsly copete with each other to try and secure audience members. Also companies try and outdo each other to satisfy the audiences

4) Look at page 2 of the factsheet. What are the problems that Hesmondhalgh identifies with regards to the cultural industries?
some of the problems include risky buisness, creativity vs commerce, high production costs and low reporduction costs and semi public goods that is the need to create scarcity

5) Why are so many cultural industries a 'risky business' for the companies involved?

This is beacuse the cultural industry company is reliant on other cultural industry companies to make the audiences aware of the existence of a new product or of the uses that they may get form experiencing the products and companies cannot completely control the publicity a product will recieve as judgements and reactions of audiences cannot completely be predicted

6) What is your opinion on the creativity v commerce debate? Should the media be all about profit or are media products a form of artistic expression that play an important role in society?

long held that there should be an opposition between creativity and i feel like media companioes do it more for the artistic values to provide pleasures to the audiences and not all for the profit that they recieve from creating the products that the audience enjoy. In my opinon media should be made for the artistic values because that is the real reason why we are watching and recieving the pleasures from the media that we consume

7) How do cultural industry companies minimise their risks and maximise their profits? (Clue: your work on Industries - Ownership and control will help here)

Cultural industries use multple strategies to help minimise their risks and amximise their profits. Some of the examples include:Vertical integration, horizontal ntergarion, divergence and synergy

8) Do you agree that the way the cultural industries operate reflects the inequalities and injustices of wider society? Should the content creators, the creative minds behind media products, be better rewarded for their work?
i agree that there should be a better reward for the content creators as they are putting in the hard work and i dont think tat they are being rewarded  as enough as they should be.This is becuase they are putting more work than that is actually required of them  and how there is a big contrast with how much the cultural industries are putting in versus how much the content creators are actually putting in

9) Listen and read the transcript to the opening 9 minutes of the Freakonomics podcast - No Hollywood Ending for the Visual-Effects Industry. Why has the visual effects industry suffered despite the huge budgets for most Hollywood movies?

The visual-effects industry has suffered because VFX companies work on fixed-price contracts that leave them with very small profits, even when movies have huge budgets. Movies keep demanding more complex effects, which makes the work take longer and cost more, but the extra cost is paid by the VFX companies, not the movie studios. On top of that, many countries offer tax incentives that encourage studios to send VFX work overseas, making competition hard and lowering earnings for the companies doing the work.

10) What is commodification?
The commodification involves the transforming of objects and services into commodities and it involves producing things not only for use but also for exchange.

11) Do you agree with the argument that while there are a huge number of media texts created, they fail to reflect the diversity of people or opinion in wider society?
Yes i agree that there are a huge number of media texts created and they fail to reflect the diversity of people or opinion in wider soicety. This is because they dont create products that are diverse enough to comply with opinion of the other people and how it impacts them and all the wider opinions and how there is a big reflection

12) How does Hesmondhalgh suggest the cultural industries have changed? Identify the three most significant developments and explain why you think they are the most important.
Hesmondhalgh suggests that the cultural industries have changed in three major ways: digitalisation, concentration of ownership, and the rise of insecure work. Digitalisation has changed how culture is created and shared, making it easier to produce but harder for creators to earn stable income. Concentration of ownership means a few big companies now control much of media, which affects what gets made and who gets heard. Insecure work has become more common, with many cultural workers facing temporary or freelance jobs. These are the most important changes because they affect how culture is made, who controls it, and the lives of the people working in the industry.
