 Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
Laura bates starts off the everyday sexism project by talking about how she has been sexualised 3 different times and that has caused her alot of problems and this happened all in the space of a week and demonstrates how that made her uncomfortable.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
The everyday sexism project links to the concept of post feminism by showing that we still need it and feminism is still required in western socites and that is quite important for

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
Networked feminism is the fourth wave of feminism and it aims to tackle social and equality issues found both on and using modern technology.Thousands of campaigns, blogs and hashtas have been used to spur on the feminist upheavel, ideologies and communites and it is a problem because since the 60s feminism has fought to recognise the social struggle of women on different number of levels

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
The four waves of feminism began in the late 19th century to early 20th centuries with a main focus on suffage and the second wave began in the 1960s campaigning for the growth of equal rights and leading to the act of equal pay 1970.The third wave began since the last 1990s and this is often identified as post feminism and yes i think now we are in the fourth wave of feminism and there is a sense of post feminism

3).
Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaig

Everyday Sexism is an online project where people share their personal experiences of sexism, showing how common and often unnoticed it still is in everyday life. HeForShe is a UN-led campaign that uses social media and celebrity support to encourage men to get involved in the fight for gender equality. The FCKH8 campaign uses bold, provocative digital content to challenge sexism and discrimination, aiming to grab attention and spark conversation, especially among younger audiences.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I think digital media has changed feminism by giving people a space to speak up, connect, and take action more easily. While modern campaigns build on ideas from earlier feminist movements, I agree that a fourth wave exists because activism today is driven by social media, online storytelling, and global participation. Projects like Everyday Sexism feel more immediate and collective than past movements, making this wave feel distinct rather than just a continuation of the third wave.
